3.04CT CEYLON GROSSULAR GARNET STUNNING YELLOW EMERALD CUT GEMSTONE (SRI LANKA)
"Sri Lanka is one of the most important localities for gemstones in the world. Almost all of these gems, however,
occur in alluvial deposits, and their original source remains unknown today." - 1982 Article (reference below).
A lot of talk about rarity but well, these are hard to find, and in this size, almost unheard of. True-to-life Ceylon (Sir Lankan) Grossular Garnet that is so clean when I first saw the picture I thought "No, it couldn't be." Sounds dramatic but I really said that, haha! The gem business is one big treasure hunt. Gotta love it. Some beautiful crystal growth lines can be seen in sunlight.
We are still keeping the price around 5 per carat because it doesn't fit our store to go much higher than that. So super deal on a super rare gemstone here. More Information
"The gem riches of Sri Lanka have been legendary for centuries. One of the earliest descriptions is that of Nearchus, who in 334 B.C. mentioned an island not far from Persia where beautiful translucent gems had been found. Without a doubt, this island was the present Sri Lanka. Much later, at the beginning of the 16th century,Portuguese sailors discovered the island and returned to Europe with some of its gemstones; seamen from Holland did the same some hundred years later. Over the centuries, tens-probably hundreds-of thousands of carats of fine sapphire, ruby, chrysoberyl, spinel, and other familiar as well as unusual gemstones have been mined in Sri Lanka. Yet many questions continue to surround the geology of the deposits, and mining methods remain, for the most part, very primitive. "
